The tale is revolting, horrific, and sad. Peter Chilvers, a former Ryanair pilot, was granted early release from British prison after having served only a third of his 18-month sentence for “coercive control” under the Serious Crimes Act.

Chilvers’ story involves a Ryanair flight attendant fiancé named Magdalena Lesicka, from Poland. Both employees of the Irish airline, they met at a company party in 2010. After a torrid romance, Chilvers proposes in 2012, but they never marry.

Later, Lesicka discovers Chilvers is having an affair with another flight attendant, but after reconciling becomes pregnant with Chilvers’ child. Chilvers demands Lesicka have an abortion but she refuses. Their child James arrives in 2015.

In 2017 Lesicka knifes young James to death and attempts to slit her wrists and hang herself, but is ultimately unsuccessful. During her trial she reveals the emotional, physical and mental abuse Peter Chilvers put her through, leading to a mental breakdown where she killed their child as was claimed in her defense.

Over the years the abuse was rampant. It’s been reported that Chilvers held her nose when they kissed so she couldn’t breathe, banged her head against a car window, made her eat hairs he’d plucked from his head, and forced her into sexual acts against her will.

The abuse was also verbal with Chilvers screaming obscenities and threatening to kill Lesicka.

In being convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to a 15-year prison term, the court accepted her defense that she had endured a “deliberate, relentless and ultimately overwhelming psychological torment” from Chilvers, and a “landscape of unending misery if she did not comply with his demands.”

During her trial, Lesicka noted, “My only goal was to get through another day. Peter’s behavior stripped me of my dignity” and, “I was broken by him and I can never be the person I was before I met him. I am alone now, I feel ugly, worthless, defenseless, ashamed, guilty and weak.”

Chilvers had been serving his sentence under home arrest since May of 2020, but was ultimately released from any detention. He now lives with the flight attendant he’d been having the affair with and their two children.
