Travel Tip Tuesday #37 - Airport Tram Tips - C Boarding Group

Airport trams & shuttles. I am always a little disappointed when I deplane and start making my way to the airport exit only to be greeted by the need to ride a train or shuttle to actually get out of the airport. Ugh! I just want to get the heck out of the airport and on my way and not stand on a meat wagon for another 3 mins…lol.

Many airports have trams and shuttles and many don’t. For example a few that do include: Sacramento, Vegas, Atlanta, Denver and Orlando. A few that don’t include San Diego, Ontario, and Salt Lake City.

If you do find yourself faced with a tram ride here’s a few tips to help you travel like a pro.

Usually we focus in on a specific travel topic for our weekly Travel Tip Tuesday posts. However, for theÂ month of October we are winging it! Anything goes! Travel Tip Tuesday #37 – Tips for riding an airport tram or shuttle

Here are 7 tips to help your airport tram experience be a little smoother:

Try to get to the front of the shuttle. Almost always the car at the front of the tram will allow you to skirt the mass exodus of fellow travelers.
Move to the other side of the tram than you entered. Most trams have doors on either side of the car. This allows passengers to exit without having to swim upstream against passengers waiting to board. I always move to the other door making it a little easier to get off the tram.
Never sit. Listen, it’s like a 5 minute ride…max. No need to seat. Stay agile by standing and you can more easily get off. Be sure to hold on as some trams can jerk you around a bit.
Use some hand sanitizer after using the tram to avoid getting bird flu. The 4000 people who held that pole before you have properly germed that baby up for you. So…avoid touching your face after you get off the tram and use a little sanitizer to keep yourself from getting whooping cough.
If you are on a call…it may drop. As biz travelers our phones usually blow up when we land. So making a call or two after deplaning is normal. Just be aware your call may drop on the tram – especially if it goes into a tunnel. Above ground trams (like at Sacremento’s airport) will not be a problem.
Pay attention to the signs and the announcements. Most airports these days have good signage and clear-ish announcements. But make sure you are paying attention about the direction and stops you need to get off on.
If you are traveling with kids be careful…sometimes they can take off sprinting for that open tram door and if you time it wrong you find yourself watching your little kid ride off to the next shuttle stop while you have a coronary!
