Showtime’s Loudest Voice in the Room features a magnificent performance from Russell Crowe, a compelling storyline, excellent supporting cast and a meaty subject to sink it’s teeth into. In our review of The Loudest Voice in the Room we conclude this is a show worth watching on your next trip and if nothing else simply for Crowe’s performance as morally reprehensible human being.
Review: Showtime’s The Loudest Voice in the Room
Based on Gabe Sherman’s book of the same name, the show starts at the end with the death of Roger Ailes, the infamous face, name and brains behind the rise of Fox News’ to news dominance. It takes viewers through the rise of both Roger and Fox News in compelling fashion seen through the eyes of major political and world events (e.g. 9/11, Barack Obama’s elections, and so on) along with behind the scenes attention paid to unbridled sexual harassment and just plain creepiness.
It paints a shocking and at times even evil picture of Roger Ailes played by a Rusell Crowe who delivers the performance of a lifetime (if he doesn’t get nominated for an Emmy it’s a crime). Crowe, in heavy makeup and probably a fat suit, rages with anger in some scenes, and yet shows a human side of Ailes through his small town upbringing and hemophilia.
This unflattering look at Fox News and the allegations of bias, corruption, and political tampering shines a light on Fox that folks on the far left already believe happen and folks on the far right will either be shocked to learn about (or impressed).
“I am picking the next f***** candidate!” exclaims Ailes after learning Barack Obama has won a second term. Scenes like this highlight the show’s attempt to show the undue influence that Fox allegedly has on the Republican party and those in office.
Comedian Seth MacFarlane delivers an unexpectedly brilliant performance in a serious and dramatic role as Aile’s head of media relations with excellent performance by a few other cast members as well. The only real gripe is the casting choices made around well known and well recognized faces like Sean Hannity and Roger Stone who resemble NOTHING like their real life counterparts and in fact are distracting.

Final Thoughts
I can’t attest to the veracity of the show and I am sure like all Hollywood productions there is both truth and fiction here, but those facts aside, the show is a magnificent collection of sobering but brilliant performances. Regardless of your politic persuasion the show is worth a watch for Crowe’s performance if nothing else.
