Green Workouts for Business Travelers

Green Workout for Business Travelers

If you’re a frequent traveler and a fitness enthusiast, you know how difficult it can be sometimes to follow your exercise routine while away from home. Business trips are a particular challenge, since your timetable is often quite different from the regular one and it is hard to squeeze in enough time for a nice workout. On top of all that, if you wish to exercise in a way that doesn’t affect the environment, things get even more complicated.

However, no matter how complex the situation may seem, you can still enjoy all the benefits of exercising while on a trip, while at the same time protecting the environment. Basically, the rules are the same as those that apply for your exercise routine at home, but you need to be ready to adapt your schedule a bit and be more flexible. So, let’s take a look at some tips that should help you achieve this goal.

Accommodation

If you realize you won’t be able to spend as much time outdoors as you’d like while on a business trip, you need to resort to plan B. Book a hotel that is not very far from the venues you need to visit on your trip, so that you can at least walk more. That means your hotel shouldn’t be just round the corner from the venue where you’ll spend most of the day, but not too far away either, since you don’t want to get tired before a meeting. Also, if the weather forecast is favorable, you might even opt for a hotel that is even a bit further away and rent a bike during your stay. You can cycle around the city and get the much needed workout, which is also very eco-friendly.

Peace of mind

Every business trip is stressful, since it usually involves presentations, pitching or negotiations, which can all bring great benefits to you and the company you represent. That’s why you need to be as relaxed and focused as possible in order to make the most of your trip.

Instead of preparing for such events or relaxing after them in a bar or in the privacy of your hotel room with some unhealthy food you’ve ordered, consider practicing yoga.

You might find a yoga class near your hotel and book a session or do it in a nearby park. If the weather is bad, you might even stay in your hotel room, but in that case you need to take your yoga mat with you. When choosing a mat, make sure it’s eco-friendly, i.e. made of biodegradable material.

Local gyms

This is another option for you to stay fit and unwind after a hard day at work. Find a local gym that features machines that don’t use electricity if you want your workout to be as green as possible.

Depending on the city you’re visiting, you might even go a step further in promoting eco-friendliness and find a gym that is equipped with machines that generate energy as you work out.

Just don’t forget to bring your gym clothes and enough items of quality men’s underwear, because you need to feel comfortable while exercising.

Don’t use plastic bottles

We all know how important it is to stay constantly hydrated and if you engage in moderate or strenuous physical activities, you need to drink even more water. It’s also common knowledge that there is a great problem related to buying bottled water and you don’t want to contribute to the pollution of our wonderful planet by using plastic bottles.

That’s why you should definitely use a water bottle that can be refilled. Most places have perfectly safe tap water and there is nothing healthier when it comes to both quenching your thirst and remaining healthy.

If you don’t have one already, make sure you get it a to-quality water bottle as soon as possible. Especially because there are still places where plastic is not recycled, but all the waste ends up in local landfills and you don’t want to promote such behavior.

Back up options

In case you realize you’ve forgotten to bring your shoes, shorts, t-shirts or some other part of gear, don’t just go to the first store to buy new items. Instead, look for places selling worn workout gear. You could even find some companies that have their own recycling program that turns old shoes into playground material.

So, if your gear is no longer usable or you don’t want to bring it home with you for some reason, you can always donate your worn out shoes for this great cause. Alternatively, you can donate your gear to a local charitable organization.

Local transport

As we’ve already mentioned, you should try to walk around the city as much as possible. However, it’s sometimes just not possible, either because of bad weather or some other objective reason. If that’s the case, make sure you use public transport instead of taxis whenever you can.

Opt for trams rather than buses, since they are more eco-friendly and because that is probably the most eco-friendly way to travel around the city when you can’t walk or cycle. Don’t rent a car unless really necessary but if you see that you really have to, make sure it’s either an electric car or a hybrid.

Look for a park nearby

Another tip for business travelers is to find accommodation near a park, so that they can take a stroll around, jog in the morning or ride a bike they’ve rented and still have enough time to take a shower and get dressed for all the meetings that day. Also, staying near a large green area means you’ll be able to enjoy much better air.

Final Thoughts on Green Business Travel

As you can see, it’s possible to maintain your fitness routine even when you’re away on a business trip. Not only that, but it can also be quite eco-friendly if you follow the tips suggested above. Many business travelers have already adopted them and they’ve never looked back. So, why wouldn’t you be next to follow in their footsteps?
