In an email sent to MileagePlus members on March 7th, United Airlines has announced that it is extending the window to complete a 2020 Status Match by 30 days.
This email was sent on the heels of a letter from CEO Oscar Munoz earlier and highlights a few key points regarding United Airlines and how members might be affected.
The big “news” of this most recent communication was United Airlines deciding to extend the Status Match window for those participating in the 2020 Status Match program by an extra 30 days.
Additionally, it sounds like United is keeping the door open for the possibility of making future changes to their program to address challenges elite travelers might have in maintaining their status this year under the travel constraints the coronovirus has brought. View from the Wing address this very question yesterday positing (among many topics) that airline rewards programs will accommodate elite travelers.
So, in other words, for now, if you are a NEW customer…they are definitely trying to help you. Existing loyalists…TBD. That is merely interesting at this time.
Here is the full letter:
What do you think? Should United be focused on helping loyal customers first? Or focusing on the new ones? In fairness, one point of view they could be taking is that it’s “too early to tell” if the travel slowdown will affect elite travelers in a meaningful way. Maybe, just maybe, this will blow over in the next few weeks and we will all be back too normal. United is clearly leaving the door open, and letting loyal customers know they have at least HEARD them, but is not ready to make a change, yet.
