Travelers to South Carolina’s Charleston International Airport (CHS) were treated to a surprise when an alligator sauntered across the runway causing delays.

According to Count On News 2, a passenger named John Maroney said his flight from Atlanta to Charleston had just landed around 7 PM last Saturday when the pilot announced that the alligator was causing a brief delay. He snapped a video of the event and shared it on social media.

The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) lives in several southern states including South Carolina and can grow up to 15 feet in length. Dream Charleston notes that alligators are indigenous to the area and that each year there are roughly 750 alligator complaints. They are common in lakes, ponds, canals, golf courses, and other bodies of water in the area.

After a brief delay, the flight continued to its gate without further incident.
