Best Luggage Tags

by Jeremy B

With the right luggage tag your suitcase can stand out amidst a sea of boring black bags meandering around an endless baggage carousel. Use our list of the best luggage tags to find the perfect tag for your bag and stand out!

Finding the best suitcase luggage tags will help travelers stand out in a sea of boring. Like with an MC Hammer Luggage TagU Can’t Touch This!

Losing a bag while traveling is a terrible thought and with black being the most popular suitcase color it’s easy to get your bag confused with someone else’s. The solution? Get yourself a luggage tag from our list of the best luggage tags.

In the following buying guide we share a list of top luggage tags based on the following categories:

The tags in our list come from a variety of stores and locations including Amazon, eBay, mom & pop shops, Etsy and other places. Some of these tags are included based on our subjective opinion (because we like them!) but most are provided for objective reasons.

PS, we also share some tips on what to put on a luggage tag and what NOT to put on a luggage tag in our luggage tag tips section at the very end of this buying guide.

What is a Luggage Tag?

A luggage tag (not to be confused with a bag tag) is used to mark or identify a piece of luggage. It usually takes the form of a small piece of plastic or leather and is attached to the outside of the luggage. Typically it includes some form of identification that denotes the bag’s owner.

Do you need luggage tags?

People use luggage tags to identify their luggage in the event it is lost or misplaced. If you’ve ever picked up your suitcase from baggage claim you will see a sea of black baggage that is often hard to differentiate. A luggage tag can help travelers visually identify their bags on the belt.

Additionally, these tags are used in the event your bag is lost while traveling. If the airline loses your luggage it can use the luggage tag as a last resort to attempt to identify the owner.

It is worth noting that people will use luggage tags for reasons other than providing contact information in case their bag gets lost (which is the primary reason). Travelers will use luggage tags to display their loyalty to an airline, provide them a visual means of identifying their bag in a sea of black bags at baggage claim, or just to show off their quirkiness. All of these are great reasons to tag your luggage.

Travelers may also use a luggage strap (instead of a tag) to help visually identify their bags. Something this very popular model is great at:

What’s important for suitcase luggage tags?

At the end of the day, a luggage tag is not the most important travel accessory you will purchase, but there are a few things to consider:

  • It should be easy to spot! It needs to stand out!
  • It should be durable. It needs to last the wear and tear of modern travel.
  • It should be easy to find your contact info. It’s no good if they can’t find you!
  • Optional: It should have some style! It’s your choice, but feel free to live a little here and get a tag that represents your style!

Should be easy to spot

A luggage tag is first a visual aid and therefore it must be able to be identified, by you, visually while it’s circling the baggage claim conveyor belt. If you can’t see it, it’s no good! We recommend bright colors or at least contrasting colors to your suitcase.

Must be durable

If it won’t last why get it! Your tag must be durable. It needs to be able to survive the rough and tumble world of airport baggage claims, security checkpoints, overhead bins, and careless baggage handlers (see video below!). A good luggage tag should be made of durable materials. Ideally, a metal strap will last the longest, but a well-made plastic strap may be sufficient. You don’t want the tag to fall off. If you happen to find a tag you like but have questions about the quality of the strap buy the tag you want and buy a separate tag with a better strap and swap them!

Suitcase luggage tags should identify YOU!

The primary reason you are getting a tag for your baggage is so it can be identified. A good luggage tag should provide the ability to include your key contact information so that the airline or fellow passengers can find you if needed.

Have some style!

This is totally optional, but the coolest luggage tags will say something about you. We offer several of these choices, below, but here’s a chance to indulge yourself a bit and make a statement with you tag.

Airline Luggage Tags

Many airlines award luggage tags as part of a reward for moving higher up the airline’s frequent flyer program. Sometimes frequent travelers will show off their Delta Platinum Luggage tag (or whatever airline) with snobby pride. Some airlines also sell luggage tags giving travelers a chance to display their loyalty on every flight (even when they are cheating on their preferred airline).

Luggage Tag Tips

People occasionally ask what to do or not with luggage tags. Do you even need a luggage tag? What should I include on a luggage tag? What should I NOT include on a luggage tug.

There’s really not too much to this though, so don’t overthink it. Here’s a few basic tips for tagging your luggage:

  • DO: Put your name & phone number on it
  • DON’T: Put your home address on it (why give out that personal information)
  • DON’T: Buy the tag then leave it empty and put no contact information in it
  • DO: Put a business card in it, if you want (less of an issue than a home address). This is optional.

Lastly, where should you attach your luggage tag? The answer sort of depends on your bag, but if you are talking about a suitcase we like to attach them on the side handles instead of the top. Placing the tag on the top handle (the one you use to roll the suitcase) likely means the tag will annoy you while you are rolling it.

Attaching the luggage tag on the side of the handle gets it out of the way while still making sure it stays visible.

Smart Luggage Tags

Smart luggage tags are a newer breed of tags that use RFID or similar technology like Bluetooth, to help track your bag while it’s in transit. This gives you the ability to see where you bag is while it’s not in your possession. Smart tags are still emerging and offer travelers some interesting options. We are taking a wait and see approach and not yet sure the value matches the cost – yet.

Personally, for customized luggage tags, I get all of mine (and friends/family) from Shutterfly. Their luggage tags are a sturdy metal with a leather strap and with the constant slew of discounts you can normally pick them up for around $5-10 each. I’ve had mine for a few years now and they’ve held up to the airlines really well.

That’s a pretty good idea. I didn’t realize Shutterfly offered that capability. I will have to go check them out. Thanks!

You made a great point that luggage tags should be able to survive the wear and tear of traveling. I cannot count anymore how many keychains from my best friend I lost because I chose to hook them up onto the zipper of my backpack. It should be a different story with luggage tags as they should be able to hang onto my bags even in the most extreme circumstances.
