Blockhain inspired companies Travala and TravelbyBit announced a merger today bringing together the leading blockchain-based hotel booking company with a major provider of blockchain-based air travel bookings.

In the announcement, they note that in the first phases of the merger the two companies will simply cross-market each other’s travel products. Later, a more comprehensive integration will occur bringing, in their words, one of the largest online travel agencies in the world together. Collectively, users will be able to access 2 million hotels and 600 airlines.

The world of cryptocurrency and blockchain is still a bit murky with wide ranging viewpoints on the usefulness of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. What is less disputable is the value of the underlying technological concept, blockchain, which provides numerous use cases beyond cryptocurrencies. Of particular interest has been the use of blockchain to attempt to disrupt the online travel agency space.

Travala (see special offer) has forged a relatively solid road forward in this space establishing a well regarded hotel booking platform that offers some unique benefits in the form of their $AVA cryptocurrency. In addition to accepting payment in crypto (along with other more traditional forms of payment) members of the platform can receive “free” $AVA as rewards for using the platform. They also guarantee their price can’t be beat.

New Travala users can create a free account using this link and will receive $50.00 in $AVA rewards credited to their account after their first stay.

TravelbyBit is another player in the blockchain inspired online travel space but in addition to hotels featured air travel as well. The also offer a five-tier status-based rewards program that rewards members in crypto for using their platform.

It will be interesting to see how the combined forces of these two players will impact the online travel agency space. Much of that depends more broadly on the travel industry, which is currently experiencing 51% unemployment in the US, combined with the continued growth and acceptability of cryptocurrencies.
