2019 was an amazing year for us here at the CBoardingGroup.com. Our travel blog grew by leaps and bounds (especially after joining the BoardingArea.com network of travel bloggers this year).
We had some really fun and interesting articles and many that were quite successful. So, here are the most popular travel articles for us in 2019 including articles about Baby Yoda, Hotel Hacking and Expensive Water Bottles. You will also find our most controversial post, most fun article and least traffic post (a total dud) at the end of this article.
Most Popular Travel Articles for 2019
It was a busy year for us. After joining the BoardingArea.com network we attempted to post every day. That turned out to be a bit of a pipe dream as I started a new job in August which made it nearly impossible to post as frequently as I’d hoped.
That said, we did increase our posting frequency churning out a decent amount of content each month. This is largely due to me spending time on the weekends writing and scheduling content to post later in the week (while I am traveling for work usually).
Of the content we published (and it was a lot), here are the most popular posts (by pure traffic, all sources including: Google, Flipboard, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, BoardingArea homepage, etc):
- 31 Amazing Hotel Hacks / Hotel Tips Travel Pros Use all the Time
- The Ultimate List of the Best Travel Blogs
- 26 Must Have Travel Gadgets & Gear
- Travel Memes

- The World’s Most Expensive Travel Water Bottle (also WTF are people spending their money on)
Here’s a more detailed look at our top travel articles for 2019 and we also have a few other articles that certainly generated some controversy listed at the very end of this article.
Turns out people love hotel hacks and hotel tips. This was our most popular article of the year, although primarily via Pinterest traffic where it burned a hole in our traffic for the year.
Second on the list was actually two posts. We maintain a directory of interesting travel blogs that we enjoy reading. We refresh it each year and recently updated the 2019 version for 2020. This post performs well in SEO and other platforms including Facebook. I guess there’s lots of like minded travelers out there interested in seeing where folks travel.
This wildly popular post has been a big earner for us (via affiliate sales) because it provides a list travel gadgets that fellow travelers might need (many are truly must-have gadgets) on their travels.
Where would we be without memes. Our huge cache of travel related memes ranks high on Google and performs extremely well for us. Especially because we are so sarcastic. 🙂
Our cornerstone content has really risen in the rankings this year and provides 147 (yes you read that right) tips for business travel. We are primarily a business traveler focused blog here and this is really the inspiration for our entire blog.
We timed this right. 🙂
On the heels of the baby yoda craze we through some baby Yoda memes with a travel angle together here in the 4Q of 2019 and it exploded. Apparently there’s quite an appetite for this young ‘in.
Amazon’s Prime Day was a big money maker for us and our reminder that it was approaching really blew up. Christmas and Prime Day are the two big shopping days for us and we earn a good amount of revenue for this blog from these two days alone.
We revamped this post (and added 6 more packing tips) later in the year and the post really exploded on both Flipboard and Pinterest. Turns out, apparently, that people can’t pack and there was a ton of interest in this topic. Look for us to continue to revamp and improve this post each year.
We shared a “what to get women who travel” post which did ok, but the corresponding partner, “what to get men who travel” blew up on Flipboard. With less than 3 months in the year (at the time it was published) it cracked the top 10 list of our most popular articles of the year. I don’t know what this says about us…
This was a throwaway article we published midway through the year. We stumbled across what we think was a pricing error that had a water bottle listed at an INSANE price (like stupid stupid stupid high). It caught the fancy of the interweb and had a mini-explosion for us. And now, we didn’t buy the water bottle.
Other Top Travel Articles for 2019 that were memorable (and narrowly missed the list or created some controversy)
In addition to our top earners for traffic, we had several other posts that were either memorable or controversial. We had to share them here with all you:
Checking your bag is stupid…change my mind – published late in the year, this post stoked some heavy controversy among readers. Little did they know they were being trolled (a little). The traffic was pretty good, but the grumpy readers were even better. Funny, funy.
Most Fun to write
I enjoy creating silly headlines that attract attention (see previous section…lol) and had some fun with this one: Thai officials say Phuket selfie snapping tourists get death penalty
Least Popular (by traffic) Post
Occasionally we get some duds and for some reason this post went over like a guest getting Bonvoyed (and it surprised us a bit). Maybe it was the graphics or the military reference. Who knows, but this post got a whopping 27 views: Travel Tip Tuesday #41 – Semper Gumby (aka “Always Flexible)
Thanks for dropping in, and thanks for a great 2019!
Thank you for stopping in this year. If this is your first visit be sure to come back for more. Add us to your RSS feed or follow us on Twitter. We greatly appreciate your readership!
