One airline’s strategy to generate new business is an unexpected success as its novel idea to sell travelers flights with mystery destinations is proving quite popular. Through the use of a vending machine, travelers purchase flights to unknown destinations, and the thrill of the unknown has taken travelers by storm.

Japanese discount airline Peach Aviation has a new program that combines the joy of travel with the thrill of the unknown. Through a creative new sales campaign, the airline is selling airline tickets through vending machines with unknown destinations.

For the affordable cost of 5,000 yen, or roughly $44, travelers can purchase a ticket to a destination unknown from a vending machine in major Japanese cities like Nagoya and Fukuoka.

According to Mainichi, the program has already resulted in over 11,000 tickets purchased proving to be wildly more successful than anticipated.

The airline offered this statement to Mainichi, “Amid the prolonged effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the airline explained, “As people tend to lack an interest in traveling now, we wanted them to regain the excitement of travel. We’d like them to let their luck choose the destination, and go on a journey in search of an unexpected encounter.”

Travelers can also partake in the promotion while in the air. Peach Aviation flight crew conduct a lottery-like sale during the flight where passengers who purchase a mystery ticket don’t know where they might end.

We think this is a brilliant campaign and would love to see it take root in one of the major domestic US airlines. Perfect candidates for such a program would certainly be Frontier, Spirit and even Southwest.

One of the most fun times my wife and I ever had was a time we went to the airport and randomly booked a flight to someplace unplanned. We ended up in Denver, went white water rafting, stayed at a great B&B, and had an amazing time. No plans, reservations, etc. Just seeing where the travel gods took us. Definitely a fun time!
