Should I upgrade my seat to business class, but not my spouse?

Not if you want to stay happily married as one man recently found out when he did exactly that and upgraded himself to business class for a 15-hour flight…but not his wife. Shockingly, she was not amused.

In the popular Reddit forum “Am I the Asshole” or AITA, a man recently shared a travel experience that resulted in an evocative discussion.

The 25-year old man and his 24-year old wife booked a flight Japan for what would have been a great vacation. He was presented with the option to upgrade his seat to business with miles and did exactly that.

Turns out his wife was not thrilled with this choice because she was stuck in coach. In fact she was quite upset according to his post. So much so that she wanted to call the airline and have him downgraded back to coach for the flight.

Clearly, a bit naive in the inner workings of relationships, the man leaned into his offense by suggesting she was just jealous instead of simply folding and upgrading her immediately…no matter the cost. What any sane man married for longer than 5 minutes would have done.

The query, however, evoked a robust discussion from other Redditors who offered multiple opinions on the man’s life choices.

YTA [you are the asshole]. You literally ditched your wife and then mocked her. You are absolutely the asshole here and she is completely right to be upset.”

The fact that OP had to ASK if he’s an AH tells me everything I need to know about this guy.

Exactly. My partner has quite a lot of airline points, I don’t. Either we both upgrade or neither of us do. He wouldn’t even think of sitting in business class while leaving me in economy even on a flight for an hour/hour and a half (our usual flight length) let alone 12 hours

His reasoning was that they’d be sleeping most of the flight and so it really didn’t matter if they were sitting together. By the way, he paid for the upgrade. Turns out he’s not a total dolt.

Here’s the post in its entirety, and we’d love to hear from our readers. What say you? Is there any universe where this man is in the right? Drop us a comment below!
