Delta’s Napkin Team Fails Again…sort of

by Jeremy B

For the second time in recent months Delta has created a bit of a flap with it’s in-flight napkins. You may recall the “creepy napkin scandal” where a well-intentioned co-marketing campaign with Coke went awry when passengers decried it’s creepiness.

Well, Delta’s back with another napkin flap and this one is a somewhat more serious in that some people are suggesting that the napkin’s message may be misread…and thus be telling folks they are not wanted.

Recent Delta traveler tweeted a pic (BELOW) of the napkin suggesting that the message could be misread to be “The World is Better Without You In It” instead of what it actually says: “The World is Better With You Out In It.”

You can see how the message can easily be misread, but let’s be real here. It doesn’t say what people may be reading into it. Nor does Delta condone offing yourself. So, let’s all pump the brakes a bit here.

That said, it is an important reminder about the power of the written word and how important it is company’s really (really!) look over ads, copy, marcomm, etc. This is the sort of PR they probably didn’t anticipate or want.

You can watch the corresponding video that accompanies the napkin copy here (and you will see it’s not their intention to promote suicide):

What do you think of the napkin? Easy or hard to misread? Do you have a picture of the napkin from your recent Delta flight? If so, tweet us!

On a more serious note, if you or someone you know is contemplating suicide the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’re committed to improving crisis services and advancing suicide prevention by empowering individuals, advancing professional best practices, and building awareness.
