Review: City on a Hill (trust us…it ain’t a great city, but it’s a compelling show w/ promise)
Kevin Bacon.
Kevin Friggin Bacon!
A name that usually causes us to think of the meme that indicates how much we are all connected and how small the world is. But, in case you forgot, Kevin Bacon is a helluva an actor too and Showtime’s City on a Hill gives him a chance to shine as a completely unsavory, arrogant and rule-bending FBI agent with a Boston accent.
Bacon’s cockiness and trademark style are on full display filtered through a Boston accent and brash body language. This may be Bacon’s best performance in years and he immerses himself in the role. It’s hard to find much if anything to like about his character, but he delivers.
Long time favorite Sara Shahi plays a thick Boston accented attorney in a supporting role and delivers a compelling performance complete with big hair and east coast attitude. In one episode, while rebuffing a local reporter she remarks, “Look at that, it’s fuck-you-a-clock already.” It’s a classic line, befitting of the role Shahi is playing.

Familiar face Jonathan Tucker (you know his face, not his name) is actually the most likeable character. Although the criminal in the show, it’s hard not to get into his corner as he tries to be both a family man, crime boss, and brother.
The only sour spot in the show is the role of African American district attorney Decourcy Ward, played by Aldis Hodge. Hodge’s performance is just ok and at times comes off a little flat, almost as if the role bores him. Fortunately, the surrounding cast is strong enough and he plays the straight, ethical-ish man to Bacon’s shitstorm of a persona.
The show is not shy on rough language with an innumerable amount of swear words uttered each episode (appropriate for a Boston cop drama) and the right amount of violence (it’s not glorified). It’s hard not to like Boston-themed shows and this show has some promise. Let’s hope Showtime renews it for Season 2.

Final thoughts
If you are looking for something new to watch while traveling, give City on a Hill a chance. Especially if you like cop / crime dramas. It ain’t the best show on right now, but it’s pretty good and the show could grow into itself in Season 2.
