In a surprise announcement today, the Washington, DC Attorney General Karl Racine has sued Marriott for deceptive resort fees claiming that Marriott has violated consumer protection laws.
The AG notes:
“Marriott reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in profit by deceiving consumers about the true price of its hotel rooms. Bait-and-switch advertising and deceptive pricing practices are illegal.”
On Twitter, Racine posted several tweets describing his action:
We are seeking a court order to force Marriott to:
✅Advertise the true prices of its hotel rooms up front
✅Pay monetary relief for DC consumers who were charged deceptive resort fees
✅Pay civil penalties for violating DC’s consumer protection laws— AG Karl A. Racine (@AGKarlRacine) July 9, 2019
In some instances, Marriott led consumers to believe the resort fees were government-imposed charges, rather than additional daily charges paid to Marriott.
This kind of bait-and-switch advertising and other forms of deceptive pricing are unfair and illegal.

Marriott charged resort fees that ranged from $9 to as much as $95 per room per day.
Discovering these charges only after a consumer has started to book a room makes it extremely difficult to compare prices and make informed choices.

The hits keep coming for Marriott who was recently hit with a massive fine for a Starwood Hotels data breach.
