WARNING: Travel Rant! 🙂 While I am always astonished at men’s airport bathroom behavior (I’ve seen some weird stuff over the years) I am never really surprised. But, I needed to vent…so here is a quick diatribe on the disgusting behavior of men in airport bathrooms.
PS…I am a guy.
Handwashing? Apparently not for travelers…
For one, there is a complete and utter disregard for hand washing among men traveling. I just don’t get it. So many guys simply don’t wash their hands after doing their business – and not just the easy business. The serious business too. I can sort of get not washing your hands after taking a leak (although, still gross), but after the other job…come on!
This reminds me of a cartoon I saw back in 1997 while at Camp Lejeune, NC. It showed a young, arrogant LT in a bathroom w/ a young, but salty Lance Corporal.
The LCpl didn’t wash his hands after he was done, and the LT scolded him: “LCpl, didn’t your mother teach you to wash your hands after using the head [bathroom]?”
The LCpl responds; “No sir. She taught me not to piss on my hands.”
Let’s have this conference call in the bathroom…
I am also amazed at the number of people talking on their phone while in the bathroom. And not just to their buddies.
We are talking customers, their bosses, their wives. And again, not just the simple business. I’ve heard dudes seated behind a closed door chatting their boss up while blowing it up. WTH! And who talks to their wife in a bathroom? My wife wouldn’t talk to me for a month if I pulled something so gross.
I don’t know how guys do it. Toilets flushing in the background…I mean I hope those noise canceling microphones are worth their money.
Is your call that important to where you simply cannot wait 3-5 minutes to have it??
Ready. Fire. Aim.
Men’s bathrooms in general are not known for their cleanliness (we have to aim!), but man, some of the stuff you see is mind boggling.
What happened here!?! Is that blood, too? <gag>
How did you get hair, there!?!
O.M.G. Why is there a river of urine flooding between my feet while I address the urine!? Oh, it’s because the last 47 guys apparently thought it was cool to piss on the wall instead of in the urinal.
Can we all agree to at least TRY to aim.
General Gripes about Bathrooms
And while we are talking about men’s bathrooms, what is with the restrooms that don’t have dividers between urinals. Seriously…get w/ it. And how about those hand dryers. I doubt having some hand towels is going to literally ruin the environment.
Hand dryers (especially the full insertion ones by Dyson) are a stupid invention. Like I want water spraying all over the place from some tepid stream of air that will only half dry my hands.
And don’t get me started on the touch-less faucets which are a great invention WHEN THEY WORK! I’ve moved through like 7 of them before getting one to kick on.
And how about making a bathroom stall big enough that I can actually fit my luggage in w/out me w/out having to climb onto the toilet and do a yoga pose to get into it.
And while we are making more room, how about widening the entrances to most of the terminal bathrooms so that two people w/ luggage can walk in/out at the same time. Ever tried to squeeze into an SLC airport bathroom? Sheesh. See my gripey post on Dallas Love Airport’s bathroom sizes and the fact it’s the only place there is a line in a men’s bathroom!
Why are you talking to me in here???
And by the way, don’t talk to me in the bathroom. In fact don’t even make eye contact. I don’t want to chat w/Â you. Seriously.
I am just going to leave the Sen. Larry Craig story alone, btw. I got nothing for that. And maybe I am not European enough, but the all-gender bathrooms are a little odd. Just saying…
Rant Over…
Ok…rant over. You may go about your day now. WHEW. I feel better now.
How about you? What’s your gripe about men’s (or women’s) bathroom behavior? What have you seen during your travels that blew your mind!?

heeheee, great humorous rant. Yes, airport restrooms need more space in the stalls. I like the mixed gender bathrooms, seems like they have a wee bit more space in them and in general. are cleaner. Maybe the multi-sex sinks work as social pressure to wash up, clean up etc.? I ran a health club for six years and it’s been my experience that the women’s restrooms, lockers and showers are far more disgusting than the men’s. When given a choice I always choose the men’s room.
I recently tripped over a used tampon applicator. YUCK!
omg
My worst experience was in Spain when I walked into a bathroom to find a guy at the sink, trousers down around his ankles, washing his parts. That scarred my mind.
OMG
What about flushing? It’s always fun walking into a stall to find a toilet filled with shit – do some people not wipe after? Course this gets better when a toilet is backed up with paper and yet someone decided to again take a shit without wiping so that now there is a pile of shit sitting out of the water for the whole bathroom to enjoy…
Also alongside the hand dryers lets list the constantly thinning toilet paper. Soon they are going to need a new ply level to describe this nearly see through marvel.
Yes! Seriously…kick flush it at least! And for sure, toilet paper is basically translucent origami paper these days.
LMAO – I agree with your observations. I know that people’s behavior is hard to change, so I gave up on many of these themes several years ago, but the layout of the bathroom (entrance only big enough for 1 person with luggage, stalls nearly impossible to navigate when you have luggage with you..) I think there should be a rule that the architects and airport management have to use the bathrooms that they’ve designed and approved (and have luggage with them.)
One additional pet peeve is when the bathrooms in the luggage carousel area has a capacity for just just 2-3 “users.” Too many times I’ve been in a situation where 4 airplanes landed at the same time (+/- 30 minutes because it takes that long to get the luggage to the belts), and therefore you have a several hundred potential users but very limited capacity..
I know right, seems like airports skimp on the bathrooms where the crowds congregate on the outside of security. Ugh!
This is why we should have a social credit system like china does.
my malehood is cleaner than sink handles. if i pee, i pee and walk out. no washing.
My one and only complaint is that men enter a stall, sit down, and pull out their cell phone. They are there for, say, maybe a half hour while others who NEED the toilet are standing in a line, waiting. Horrible behavior.
So true!
